Do Something…..But Not yet!

‘Settled Status’ is what the UK government is calling its new registration scheme that it plans to bring in for EU citizens at Brexit.  The proposals have not yet been agreed by UK parliament and will also, no doubt, be scrutinised by the EU,but if this all goes through EVERYONE who is not yet a British citizen will have to go through this process.

The current proposal is here

https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families

So it will cost £65 per adult and half that for chidlren and will be free for those who already have ‘Permanent Residence.’  (those who completed the 80 page form)

Applicants will have to prove their identity, that they have been resident in the UK for 5 years (those who have not yet been here 5 years can apply for ‘Pre-settled status’) and that they have no ‘serious’ criminal record.

It looks like residency is defined as being in UK for at least 6 months each year within those 5 years, and there are some exceptions for people who have been studying or working abroad.

Another piece of possible good news is that it says that if a mistake is made on the form, that the Home office will come back to the applicant rather than just refusing the application. This makes a change from the ‘Hostile Environment’ policy that the Home Office has been operating.

It is a criminal offense for people who are not qualified to help people with migration issues.  So EU welcome will have to be very careful as to what we offer, but in co-operation with our partners we will do all we can, and we are at present looking into whether our project workers can have training to help people.  Watch this space!

So many of you will have to do something next year if this comes into operation, but it’s not there yet. So sit back, keep all your documents and keep listening!

Windrush…..Brexit Rush?

The sad mess of the way some of the so called Windrush generation of Commonwealth migrants, have been treated, has prompted more fears about how EU migrants will get on after Brexit.

Dave Adcock wrote to Caroline Nokes MP Minister of State for Immigration, and received this reply

‘Plans for the EU citizens’ settled status scheme are progressing well and it is my intention that it should be as straightforward and non bureaucratic as possible.  We have a duty to the 3 million EU citizens who have made their home here to provide a simple scheme which proves their right to access benefits and services in a way that was not done for the Windrush generation, much to my shame.’

We would recommend people to link up with UKCEN   http://www.ukcen.co.uk/   The group’s main objective is to promote the acquisition of UK citizenship and residence documentation. Their purpose is support members with the application process for: Permanent Residence Certification, Registration Certificate for Qualified Persons, Residence Permits for EEA Family Members, Children’s registration, Adult naturalisation. Hate Crime.  Don’t Suffer in Silence

We are pleased to announce that we have been asked to become a Third Party Reporting Centre for Hate Crime.  This means when things go wrong, we can help.

Hate crimes and hate incidents are offences and incidents that target a person’s race/nationality; ethnicity; disability; sexual orientation; faith/religion or gender identity. They are motivated by hostility or prejudice and can have a devastating impact on victims, their family, friends and or the community.

If you are subject to anything like this, you can, of course contact the police directly, or you can report it in this way by clicking on

https://beta.met.police.uk/true-vision-report-hate-crime/

You can give as much or as little detail as you wish and can remain anonymous if you want.  Alternatively contact us at EU Welcome and we will be delighted to help you in any way we can.

Mayday!    Mayday!

Just over a century ago ‘Mayday’ became an international distress signal.  It was used to call for help by the Titanic.   They tell me ‘Mayday’ is a corruption of the French ‘m’aidez’ (help me!)   EU Welcome has been helping EU national living and working  in and around Southampton since 2004, and we will continue to do so as long as we can.

This month we are quite limited as Anna is unavailable and so Adriana is staffing our drop ins alone.  Dave now is just a volunteer, but is happy for people to contact him preferably by e mail dave@euwelcome.org.  A full list of our advice sessions can be found lower down this newsletter.

Brexit Update

The Guardian newspaper recently published a podcast about Brexit which seems useful.  You can listen here  https://www.theguardian.com/politics/audio/2018/apr/25/eu-citizens-rights-and-the-shadow-of-windrush-brexit-means-podcast  Remember though that as yet there is no requirement to do anything.

April 2018

And Finally……..

After about 10 years this will be the final EU Welcome newsletter to come into your mailbox. We’ve developed a mailing list of around 1,200 people but new regulations known as GDPR mean that we would have to ask your express permission to continue to send it to you.

So we’ve decided to stop sending our news in this way.

But do not despair, you can still keep up to date with what’s happening at EU Welcome in the following ways:

We will be regularly updating our website www.euwelcome.org but also you can follow us on Twitter @EUWELCOME or on Facebook EU Welcome Project https://www.facebook.com/groups/50151597856/?ref=br_rs   Many of you are already ‘friends’ with Dave Adcock on Facebook but we’d strongly recommend that you ‘join’ the EU Welcome page to ensure you hear everything that’s going on.

This month our service is a bit limited as one of our staff is on sick leave and the other has some annual leave.  So do check and keep yourselves informed to avoid disappointment.

So final Mailchimp newsletter, but EU Welcome continues.

We work flexibly and are generally contacted through telephone or internet but we also hold regular ‘drop in’ advice sessions throughout the city.

We are particularly keen to help people who have housing difficulties and who face possible homelessness, and we work closely with agencies that work with ‘street homeless’ people. We also support victims of domestic violence helping them to access available services.

We help people access employment that reflects their qualifications, training and passions.

We wish to ensure that all clients understand their rights in the UK, and can play their part to make Southampton an even better place in which to live and work.
