November 2018

Remembering…..and Moving Forward

November is a time for remembering.  It begins with All Saints Day when the dead are remembered. Then in UK we have Guy Fawkes/Bonfire night when we ‘remember, remember the 5th of November.’  Finally on 11th November we have Remembrance Sunday which this year commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1.

It’s good to remember the past because we can learn from it. Today the UK seems to be more divided than ever especially over BREXIT.  Maybe by the end of this month we will no more as to what the future holds.

I’m impressed though by people who are doing their bit to change things and to bring people together.

EU Welcome is part of the Love Not Hate campaign in Southampton aimed to stamp out Hate Crime in Southampton.  The community-wide partnership has created a network of 18 centres across Southampton where people can report hate crime and access support.  A new smartphone app, Southampton Love Don’t Hate, has been developed as part of the campaign.

Also two local businesses have impressed us as they have become places run by EU ‘migrants’ and where people from different cultures can mix.

The Pig n Whistle pub in Shirley Pig n Whistle  https://www.facebook.com/pignwhistlepub/ is Polish owned but people from all backgrounds are enjoying meeting there and sampling good Polish food, whereas in Bedford Place there is the Lithuanian run Shepherds Inn  https://www.facebook.com/berneliuuzeigasouthampton/ running all sorts of events and serving Lithuanian food.    There are also Romanian and Portuguese places in Shirley where people mix together.

Equally I was encouraged this month when I was asked to see if I could recruit some Bulgarian volunteers to help in a school, and many responded wanting to play their part.

Finally if you’re Polish and interested or perplexed by the NHS I’d recommend this event to you 4 November at the Polish Club https://www.facebook.com/events/2154508784581362/

October 2018

Six Letters Beginning With B!

Brexit!    All is still very uncertain.  The UK Government has been testing its Settled Status applications in some other part so fhte country, but there is little people here can do yet.   We have written to 2 MP’s including a government minister to try to clarify what help we will be able to give with the Settled Status applications.   It’s illegal to offer ‘immigration’ advice without a specific qualification.  Yet for Settled Status the government has said that it expects employers and landlords to help!

We await a reply!

We are promised , however that the process will be simple and inexpensive, and that most people that have been living and working here will not have problems gaining Settled  Status.

Meanwhile there is talk on a ‘No Deal’ Brexit which MIGHT cause huge disruptions and uncertainty for everyone, and also a campaign for a 2nd Referendum and/or another General Election which could change everyting.

So Keep Calm and Carry On!

Please note we will no longer be running our evening session at the Polish Club on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.  The Club had let us use the bar area whilst other activities were going on.  Now the Polish Club is closed on a Wednesday and we cannot have access.  Dave has been running this. If you would like to meet with him at any time please SMS 07786392886 or e mail dave@euwelcome.org

September 2018

Wanted Not Tolerated!

The new Brexit Secretary for the British government, Dominic Raab has said that the future of EU migrants in the Uk will be secure even if there is no agreement reached with the EU over a Brexit deal. He continued it would be ‘inconceivable’ they will be ‘turfed out.’

An article in the Daily Telegraph though hit the nail on the head when it said that EU citizens need to feel ‘wanted’ rather than just being told they will be allowed to stay.

EU Welcome has always emphasised the worth and dignity of each individual. No-one leaves their country on a whim. Everyone has a story to tell and a reason for coming here.   Sometimes we can’t solve people’s problems, but we can always show that we care.

On 6 September a meeting is taking place in Salisbury titled ‘What Future for EU citizens in the UK?’  The speaker is part of www.ukcen.co.uk   For full details see https://www.facebook.com/groups/the3millionSolent/    Meanwhile the Home Office’s latest information says this https://www.gov.uk/government/news/home-office-launches-toolkit-for-employers-to-support-eu-settlement-scheme

Do remember though that some people feel that Brexit will be delayed, and there are calls for another Referendum ‘The People’s Vote’ https://www.peoples-vote.uk/   Nothing is certain!

Debt and the inability to pay bills can be a real problem for many.  If you have problems with paying your TV licence. EU Welcome now has direct access to advisers who can help with a payment plan. Contact us for details.Talking of debt be very careful about individuals who offer to lend money.  Click here to see hwo they can ruin lives http://www.stoploansharks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Stop-Loan-Sharks-Newsletter-Summer-Issue-2018.pdf

August 2018

Life’s a Beach!

Brits love to moan about the weather, but until recent rains, we’ve had a great Summer.  Southampton’s Guildhall Square even has a beach!

Whether you’re here throughout August or away either in your home country or somewhere on holiday, we wish a you a great time.

EU Welcome is there to help and support you throughout August.  For latest news on Brexit and how it effects you, look at the EU Welcome Project page on Facebook or @EUWELCOME on Twitter.  At the moment people dont need to do anything, but there will be registration needed at some time for Settled Status.  That all depends of course on UK reaching an agreement with the EU. Some are also calling for a 2nd Referendum now that the implications of leaving the EU are more clear.  So maybe Brexit won’t happen!!

Oh well!   In the meantime whether on Guildhall Square, Bournemouth seafront or somewhere exotic, life’s a beach!  (come rain or shine!)

PS Talking of travel, I’m told Bournemouth airport is considering flights to Poland again, but where in Poland. See this article http://www.magazynpl.co.uk/2018/07/gdansk-katowice-warszawa-gdzie-chcesz.html

If  interested please leave your details and contact number on  02381205287. Any referrals necessary will then be made directly by Princess Anne Hospital to the relevant doctors.  This in no way effects the 2 free scans that all women should receive from the NHS during their pregnancy
