Mayday!    Mayday!

Just over a century ago ‘Mayday’ became an international distress signal.  It was used to call for help by the Titanic.   They tell me ‘Mayday’ is a corruption of the French ‘m’aidez’ (help me!)   EU Welcome has been helping EU national living and working  in and around Southampton since 2004, and we will continue to do so as long as we can.

This month we are quite limited as Anna is unavailable and so Adriana is staffing our drop ins alone.  Dave now is just a volunteer, but is happy for people to contact him preferably by e mail dave@euwelcome.org.  A full list of our advice sessions can be found lower down this newsletter.

Brexit Update

The Guardian newspaper recently published a podcast about Brexit which seems useful.  You can listen here  https://www.theguardian.com/politics/audio/2018/apr/25/eu-citizens-rights-and-the-shadow-of-windrush-brexit-means-podcast  Remember though that as yet there is no requirement to do anything.

Jobs!

We’ve had some good news last month with several friends/clients of EU Welcome finding jobs that suit their training, experience and passions.  Remember we are happy to help with CV’s and job applications.  We’ve heard that the YMCA has some interesting opportunities available.  See https://www.ymca-fg.org/category/current-vacancies/

Have You a Creative Project Up Your Sleeve?

Nuffield Southampton Theatres are looking for people who want to influence and shape the future of culture in the city. We are looking for anyone who wants to make things happen in your spaces around the city.

We understand that finding space, time and money can be issue to getting things started so to get the ball rolling we’re looking for ideas. We want to equip you with the skills to plan your own arts events, support other artists in the city and get you on the way to making things happen!

NST will provide free training, support and guidance on how to get the ideas up on its feet. Depending on your idea we’ll start with the basics and work on growing the idea. We’ll also provide cash of up to £1,000 to help overcome some of the financial barriers of putting on events.

Hate Crime.  Don’t Suffer in Silence

We are pleased to announce that we have been asked to become a Third Party Reporting Centre for Hate Crime.  This means when things go wrong, we can help.

Hate crimes and hate incidents are offences and incidents that target a person’s race/nationality; ethnicity; disability; sexual orientation; faith/religion or gender identity. They are motivated by hostility or prejudice and can have a devastating impact on victims, their family, friends and or the community.

If you are subject to anything like this, you can, of course contact the police directly, or you can report it in this way by clicking on

https://beta.met.police.uk/true-vision-report-hate-crime/

You can give as much or as little detail as you wish and can remain anonymous if you want.  Alternatively contact us at EU Welcome and we will be delighted to help you in any way we can.
